the grand canyon

Wednesday, 29 August 2012
I may have had mixed feelings about Las Vegas but it was worth spending a couple of days there if only to get to see the Grand Canyon. I booked a helicopter tour from Las Vegas which involved flying over Lake Mead and the Hoover dam, over to the Grand Canyon, a quick pit stop there and then back to Las Vegas and over the Strip. There was a slight mix up (ie I messed up) which meant that we had to make a quick dash for the airport terminal the day before we were expecting and so the whole thing was slightly more stressful than I was expecting. Once we took off though, and all you could see for miles and miles was stunning scenery, all of that was forgotten.

In some ways, I found the dessert even more stunning than the Grand Canyon itself. I love the colours and the way the landscape ebbed and flowed. It was nothing like I was expecting and all the more impressive for that.

It was also much easier to photograph than the Grand Canyon which is just on a scale that has to be seen to be believed. In fact, the whole thing has to be seen to be believed. And, just as impressively, the whole thing was vomit free!

Amazing! I have never been to the Grand Canyon or to Vegas, but I have spent some time in the desert, and it is truly magnificent. Glad you are having a fun trip!

I have never been to Gran Canyon, or Las Vegas, or in the US for that matter but from what I've heard, the scale is totally different from Europe in every aspect.
I would love to one day see the Gran Canyon (not so much Vegas). It looks magnificent.

gorgeous! I've actually never been to the grand canyon, but the desert fascinates me too. I'm afraid of helicopters though so I love the views you captured :)

Breathtaking scenery and beautiful photos, Kathryn. Staring into miles of mountains and sea and air makes you feel so small, doesn't it?

Spot the deliberate mistake in paragraph two? I LOVE that you wrote 'dessert' rather than 'desert' - what could be more fitting for your beautiful baking blog?! ;-)

looks amazing. Such a beautiful natural landscape (the canyon, not vegas).

Happy you're having a good time!

These photos are timeless. I sometimes forget about all the amazing sites in this vast country as I'm forever pining for across the pond... this reminds me that there are many places to explore over here too!

Oh wow. Those are some gorgeous pictures. Amazing that you could get them from a helicopter! That must have been a great experience. I visited the Grand Canyon when I was 4. Don't remember a thing. If I ever go again, I want to do something like this! I'm happy the helicopter ride made Las Vegas worth it. :)

Kathryn, what stunning photographs! I feel so homesick. I live in Canyon State for around a year before I moved back to London. My memories are full of the scent of lemon blossoms and prickly pear jelly. My family and I stayed in a little town called Bisbee where I had the most sensational blueberry pancakes heavy with butter.
